Snowman Alphabet & A Hero Quilt

Karen does it again with another great Crabapple Hill pattern. 

I did a different take on snowflakes.

And swirly girled my way around all the lovely embroidery.

I love these quilts. Maybe someday I'll make one for myself.

We had a sew day for American Hero Quilts on Saturday at Aunt Mary's Quilt Shop. This quilt was put together by Alanna. She cut the stars out of strip pieced blocks we get from a group that sews at the Snohomish Senior Center. Sadly the need for quilts is not slowing down. AHQ is sending 100 quilts a month to a military hospital in Afghanistan. If you'd like to join us e-mail me & I'll get you on the list.

Gotta run. Quilts are calling. Don't tell Little Mister but I'm going to see him next week. It's his birthday. I've been busy putting the finishing touches on his surprise present.

30's Irish Chain

My friend Diane made this beauty. It will have yo-yo flowers along the vine in the border.

I tried something different in the border.

Last week I did this mondo king size quilt. I was manipulating some of the extra fabric (happens sometimes) & the hopping foot took a bite out of my finger. Ouch! 

This week Nana is channeling her inner sewing skills & making something special for the Little Mister's 4th (say it isn't so) birthday. Here's a hint.

I have some special quilts this week. A Crabapple Hill Snowman Alphabet & a lovely mini appliqué from one of the Sassy's. Tune in next week for pictures. I might even have a "caped crusader" to show you.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Mr S & I are going to Anacortes later to my favorite park, Washington Park  .  If you've never been you should really go. The views of the San Juan Islands  are stunning & sunsets are all that & more. Psst Pam, they have a campground & great food & brews at Rockfish Grill.

Friday Fun

I'll be going here after 3 o"clock today. Go here to their home page or if you are on Facebook try here. Shambala Farms had delicious iced tea. Lots of great fresh fruit too. Strawberries & the donut peaches were my favorites.

Used some of the zucchini for this recipe I found on Pinterest & have made it a couple times.

Easy Cheesy Zucchini Bake
(Makes 4-6 servings; recipe adapted from a recipe by Karen Niessing in PenzeysBack to School 2011 Catalog, with suggestions from my sister Pam.)

Ingredients:
2 medium-sized zucchini, cut in slices or half-moon slices
2 medium-sized yellow squash, cut in slices or half-moon slices
2-4 T chopped fresh basil (or even less, depending on how much you like the flavor of basil)
2 T thinly sliced green onion
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
3/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 cup + 1/2 cup low-fat white cheese (I used Pizza Cheese, which is a low-fat blend of Mozzarella, Provolone, Romano, and Parmesan)
1/2 cup coarsely grated Parmesan (I would use a little less if you only have the very finely grated Parmesan from a can)
salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350F/180C.  Spray an 8" x 8" baking dish with olive oil or non-stick spray.  Wash the squash and cut in slices or half-moon slices.  Wash basil, spin dry or dry with paper towels and finely chop.  Slice green onions.

Combine the sliced squash, chopped basil, sliced green onions, dried thyme, garlic powder, and both kinds of cheese and stir together until the veggies are coated with cheese and the herbs are well-distributed.  Season with salt and fresh ground black pepper.  Put the mixture in the baking dish and bake uncovered for about 25-30 minutes.

When the zucchini is nearly cooked through, take the casserole dish out of the oven and sprinkle over the remaining 1/2 cup of grated cheese.  Put the dish back in the oven and bake 10-15 minutes longer, or until the cheese is melted and nicely browned and zucchini is fully cooked.  Serve hot.

For The Love of Purple

You might remember from a previous post that Julia the Dentist loves purple. Her office in covered in a sea of purple quilts. Here are the latest additions. All of the quilts have a tiny piece of silver lame.

This is a mondo king size quilt. You know, the ones that seem like you'll never get done.

I didn't run fast enough last week & caught Mr S's cold. Feeling better. Still have that 1-900 voice if you know what I mean. 

Saturday is the Sew Day for the Stanwood-Camano Hero Quilters at the Stanwood Senior Center. We make quilts for American Hero Quilts.  They are quilts for wounded soldiers. Right now they are sending 100 quilts a month to one of the field hospitals in Afghanistan. We'll be there from 10-3:30. So far our little group has made 844 quilts for American Hero Quilts. It's an amazing group of quilters.
